HEALTH UNIT COORDINATOR

West Kentucky Community & Technical College is pleased to announce we are offering an online course to prepare those who wish to seek employment as a Health Unit Coordinator. This course is available through the College's Training Center for Community and Economic Development. In this course, students learn the responsibilities of becoming an important, integral member of the health care team. The theory portion is self-paced with a required book and on-line assistance by a faculty member. Students exit well prepared to obtain a job in a health-care setting, even without clinical experience.

Although health unit coordinating began as a clerical job as an assistant to the nurse, today it is a position that consists of many responsibilities such as coordinating the activities of the nursing staff, the doctors, the hospital departments, the patients and the visitors of the nursing unit.

The health unit coordinator functions by communicating all new doctor's orders to the patient's nurse; charting the patient's vital signs; maintaining the patient's chart; performing non-clinical tasks for admission, discharge and transfer of a patient; preparing the patient's chart for surgery, and handling all telephone communications for the nursing unit.

More and more, health unit coordinating is becoming recognized as an entry-level position on the non-clinical career ladder.

Interested students should be aware that most hospitals and health care facilities require employees to pass a criminal background and/or drug screen check before being hired. Additionally, most hospitals and health care settings require a high school diploma or GED to be hired.

This course is also open entry, meaning it can be started at anytime during the year. To further prepare for the job market, medical terminology and keyboarding classes are also suggested. Please refer to the Training Center for Community and Economic Development for information regarding fees and payment.

Questions regarding the course can be directed to the Training Center for Community and Economic Development or Sally Roof, course instructor.

Upon successful completion of the course, the student will qualify to receive a certificate from the Training Center for Community and Economic Development in "On-line Basic Understanding of Health Unit Coordinating."
